Active Building Control is an established company aiming to be at the forefront of Building Regulations approval services in the North West and the Midlands. We have been approved by the Construction Industry Council as a Corporate Approved Inspector.

This means that we can approve plans and building work for compliance with the Building Regulations 2010. We offer a high quality service, tailored to your needs, responsive to the demands of your building project, low on bureaucracy and very approachable.

Heading up the team are Directors – Mike Wood BSc (Hons) MBEng and Tom Raftery BSc (Hons) MRICS who are qualified and experienced surveyors with over 30 years Building Regulations experience, with several years in addition in commercial surveying.

Tom Raftery

Tom Raftery BSc (Hons) MRICS


Tom is a Chartered Building Surveyor with valuable experience of ‘client side’ commercial building surveying prior to developing knowledge and experience in both public and private building control. This combination provides an essential insight into how our clients may view the application of building regulations to their projects. With experience of all types of projects, from residential through to commercial new build, conversion and office fit out, Tom is always on hand to assist and guide clients through the building control process.

Mike Wood

Mike Wood BSc (Hons) MBEng


Mike has over 30 years’ experience in Building Regulations, including major projects such as new hospitals, shopping centres and public assembly buildings. Always willing to spend time helping clients to comply with the multitude of statutory requirements in the most economic and efficient manner.

Peter Hodnett

Peter Hodnett Bsc (Hons), C Build E, MCABE

Principal Building Control Surveyor

Peter has been working within the building control profession in both the public and private sector for over 21 years.  He has during this time built up a considerable knowledge base of construction projects of a broad range, including large scale residential developments, conversions and many commercial projects of differing scale and usage. Included in his resume are challenging projects including museum conversions to buildings with monument status and project management of Building Regulation Approvals for a large Higher Educational service provider on multiple multi million pound schemes. Always willing to find helpful and effective solutions to compliance for our clients, he can be relied upon to contribute to the successful design and construction phase of any project.

Office Manager

Alison’s¬†organised and efficient work method provides vital support to the Active Building Control team. Having previously worked as a project manager for an engineering and manufacturing company she is experienced in co-ordinating projects to meet deadlines as well as working within very strict guidelines. Alison joined Active Building Control in 2011 and has become an established and highly valued member of the management team.

Assistant Building Control Surveyor

Tarique has gained valuable experience working within a well-established multi-disciplinary consultancy as a contract administrator in Manchester developing his skills by actively being involved with JCT Minor works projects also requiring CDM on site. Whilst planning and designing, in accordance to the Building Regulations; Tarique took a keen interest towards Building Control. Now thriving in the field, Tarique aims to become Chartered with the RICS or ABE in the very near future and has embarked on a structured training plan with Active to help achieve his goals.

Rut Saez

Quality Management and Administration

Having trained in administration in Madrid, Spain, Rut went on to gain experience in customer service, accounts and admin. She moved to England in 2015 and has progressed quickly in her command of English and customer service skills. Her attention to detail and meticulous work method enable her to provide vital support in maintaining our quality assurance systems to ensure our customers are consistently provided with the highest level of service.
